Eating Clay

Digging the wells deeper after some problems with them drying up this year.

Nothing better than fresh honey comb with bees still in it.

Beekeeping at Siffoe Peace Corps In-training. Look at that uncapped honey :)

At the Samateh's. The kids were literally eating clay.

Women fetching water for their garden beds.

Hello,
I really appreciate your straight forward blog. Its very worthwhile.
Regarding the Eating of Clay - it's called "Pica" and is part of the black culture carried over from its origins in Africa, very likely, where you are in The Gambia. There is evidence to show that it fulfills the mineral nutrient needs of pregnant women and small children during times of malnutrition. Those who eat clay say they like the taste, others say that it is habit.
It is common to see wild animals, i.e. elk in the Rocky Mtns of Montana/Idaho, eating soil high in mineral salts, often mining the soil to more than 3 feet below the surface. I have seen their soil-laiden droppings last for several years!
Thanks for sharing this with us.
We all wish you the best, during your day's in The Gambia, and when you return, an even happier welcome home!
Sincerely.
W.
